Ugh…I hate patrons

October 9, 2008 at 5:12 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Working at a library one expects mispronounciations to come up amongst the patrons.  Today I was called a libarian, but not by a child, but by an adult male.  Now I normally wouldn’t make fun of someone for this (okay that is probably a lie) but he did two things that I absolutely hate, so he is fair game.

1) Yelling to me from your computer.  I am a human being, please get your lazy ass up and walk to my desk if you have a question.  This is a librarym so don’t yell across the room for me.

2) When he finally did get up and come to the desk (I ignored him when he yelled across the room) he interupted while I was helping another patron.  Wait your turn pal, the computer isn’t going anywhere.

So he gets up to the desk and says his card isn’t working.  Do you want to know why your card wasn’t working?  Do you?  It’s because you left off the last digit of your card #, dumbass that’s why.  After getting him on the Internet, he then comes up to ask if he can use our phones (desk phone not pay phone) to call the unemployment agency.   What the hell?

I’ve been at the library since noon and have been up since 7:30 am, running on about 5 hours of sleep…ugh,  I hate patrons

Bridzilla Businessmen, Aughra, and the common cold

September 20, 2008 at 11:31 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

I thought my immune system was rock solid, no germ could penetrate it…how foolish to think that working in libraries for seven years would make me untouchable.  I have been over taken by the common cold and I loath it with all my being.  It all started on Thursday while at work.  It was an average day, patrons coming and going, a few annoying teenagers, and a crazy, rambling woman who looked like Aughra.

Though this is an obvious highlight (though a somewhat terrifying one) to the day, all was not made of sunshine and Dark Crystal muppet look a likes.  As the day progressed my throat began to feel somewhat scratchy and I was developing a headache.  Things that were usually slightly annoying now became intolerable (giggling girls) and so I sat on the floor behind the desk putting GST stickers on books allowing dear Ben to take care of all the patron’s extraneous internet needs. When I finally got home I passed out only to feel even worse the next morning.   I attempted to remain immobile for the day, but the unfortunate reality of my life is that when I’m not at work or class I need to run errands.  Hence I went to the Farmers market, Service Repro., the mall, and pet supplies plus while all I really wanted to do was lay back and let someone take care of me.  Another annoyance if you are a single person who doesn’t live with their parents you are required to take care of your own sick self, no one to make you soup or tea, but yourself.  Very unfair.

This morning I woke up to a pile of dirty dishes in my sink. They were there yesterday, but I was so absorbed in my misery that I didn’t pay them any particular attention.  I feel better today, making my more coherent self take notice and be disgusted by the food particles clinging to the plates in the sink, but still to exhausted to bother doing them.  I’m also at work all day, a nice 8-hour shift to make me feel just chipper about my fifty-million snot rags littering the waste bin.  I could have called in sick, but I cannot afford it and I’m functional enough to sit at a desk and print off papers for our Internet People.  How can one person have this much snot in them?  Seriously, I think I’m just sneezing out my brains or something, because it doesn’t stop.

Today just got lovelier when I had a arrogant businessman come in wanting to fax an exhorbant amount of pages.  I tried to get him to go to Kinkos  “I don’t have time,” I tried to tell him I needed to clear it with my supervisor, “I don’t have time I’m going to go pay with my credit card” and I was too tired to put up a decent fight.  Thus I am faxing 74 pages of bridal registrations.  Screw you Bridal Expo.

Bordom makes the world go round…

August 13, 2008 at 12:18 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , )

I am typically a great employee, really I am, but right now…not so much.  In my defense I’ve been left alone at the desk, it’s incredibly slow, they have taken away the tedious comma project (see previous post) and I cannot go off to do any away from desk tasks.  Todays bout of slacking is particularly bad because to my left at the SBRC is the big boss of the library typing away on one of the computers (OMG!  I think I just saw her on facebook) and I must say the typing skills are lacking.  Her fingers are posed over the keyboards, but when finger comes to key its really slow, almost like pecking.   Enough about my work ethic, lets talk about my not so interesting day.

I woke up at 8:30 and decided to sleep until 9.  When I woke up at 9 I decided 9:30 sounded better.  Unfortunately, directly after dismissing my alarm my phone started ringing; it was work.  After having about a 1/2 second panic that I had overslept I answered (I didn’t work until 4 P.M. today).  My boss was calling me to ask about the Sunday schedule (which was extremely imperative at the moment, but for some reason seemed worth waking me up for).  Coming to the conclusion that fate wanted me to wake up I did and it was good.  I read my book waiting for my roommate to finish up her shower so I could take my turn at de-stinkafying myself.  After we were both squeaky clean and my discovering a vast amount of bug bites all over my body, which had not been there the night before, we went to the Farmers Market.  The Farmers Market is my new favorite place.  We went with twenty dollars and got a nice haul with change to spare.  It is a most notable day for today is the first time our fridge has been full in the history of time.  Amazing.  Ate cucumber sandwiches for lunch, read some more, watched some Olympics, and made my bed (oh so interesting, I know).

Now I am at work and bored out of my skull and a little cold…why is the library so cold?  I think they are trying to freeze us in time so they can use us as a museum in the future.  I suppose the exhibit could be called “The last of the Intelligent people and those they serve” or something more interesting that I currently cannot fathom.  Ugh… someone is playing their music too loud and I don’t want to yell at them…they almost never listen or they turn it down and then turn it back up two minutes later.

Alright I have no more to say, not that anything I’ve typed out has been severely entertaining.

Comma, Muppets, Comma…

August 11, 2008 at 11:28 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

I hate being bored…unfortunately I seem to be bored the majority of my life (this could be the reason I hate it so much).  Currently I’m stuck idling at a service desk while one desk mate has disappeared and the other is probably taking their break or just meandering.  The past hour has been spent distributing commas to names that are without (yes it is as tedious as it sounds) and blacking out bar codes with a scented marker (I think it is supposed to be black liquorice, but it just smells like ass) with a  and hitting a print button, with an occasional card issuing to those who are so desperate for free Internet.  In an effort to relieve such boredom I looked at the Olympic schedules , counted how many patrons were looking at Myspace, and then searching for youtube videos that I can watch without sound.  My efforts produced very little results in that the only slightly happy-making videos featured muppets, but it just isn’t the same without sound.

Luckily I remember this skit from my youth and was able to fill in the lyrics at work, but for those of you with sound, please enjoy to the utmost.
